Getting there and back
Transport for the event is based around Brisbane and the major transport options along the eastern seaboard, utilising all the regular options people have for getting around. See Getting there and back info sheet for all the details including the event charter bus options, car parking, independent travel options, accommodation and town maps.
Some excellent bike transport options are available to offload your bike before you leave home.
We figure if you don't have your boxed or packaged bike to lug everywhere then you can use all the regular services just like a 'normal' tourist or resident. For details of the excellent bike transport options available see the Bike Transport info sheet.
You can get to Brisbane from SEQ, southern regional Queensland or interstate by train, bus, car or plane and then use our event charter buses to travel to Bundaberg from Brisbane. Do the reverse for the journey home.
There will be a "showers and toilets only" free campsite in Bundaberg on Friday 29/8/08 if you don't want to shell out for accommodation in town. There are local eating houses and extra options for food on Friday and Saturday morning.
Full campsite services including catering will be available from lunch on Saturday 30/08/08. There will be showers at the finish site for the use of people who have an extended trip home. From the finish there will also be available a first ever option to transport your luggage home which means you can ride your bike all the way (or connect with suburban train services also). You can turn this ride into Bundaberg to Home. See the Bike Transport info sheet for further details.
Suggested Itineraries
Here are some suggested travel plans to help you get to the start and home again.
I have to work on Friday 29/8/08
Try to scarper a little early and catch our 6pm bus OR Once you have offloaded your bike via one of our bike transport services you could take the rest of your gear to work then go straight to the bus ... OR ... Catch our Saturday morning bus direct to Woodgate Beach. You miss the first days riding but you can enter for only 8 days and save some cash.
I'm from Brisbane and I can travel on Friday 29/8/08
Great! Use our Depot or Home service to offload your bike and then catch one of our charter buses.
The trip home is easy either on our buses, the train or get your family or friends to come and grab you. Remember you can send your luggage by truck and ride home.
I'm from South East Qld and I can travel on Friday 29/8/08
Too easy! Use our Depot service to offload your bike and then catch the train to Brisbane on Friday and connect with our charter buses or the tilt train direct to Bundy.
I'm from Northern NSW and I can travel on Friday 29/8/08
Too easy! Use our Depot service to offload your bike and then catch the train or bus to Brisbane on Friday and connect with our charter buses or the tilt train direct to Bundy. You could also consider driving to Brisbane, parking and catching the bus to Bundaberg - makes the home journey very easy.
I'm from North Queensland
Fly to Brisbane and catch our charter buses. There are 2 bus departures available from the airport or link into other Brisbane services as suits. Or you may be able to fly, catch a bus or drive directly to Bundaberg.
Getting home again is easiest by using either the event charter service to the airport, back to Brisbane to connect with train and bus services or back to Bundaberg to collect your car.
I'm from Interstate
Fly to Brisbane and catch our charter buses. There are 2 bus departures available from the airport or link into other Brisbane services as suits. Or you may be able to fly or catch a bus or train directly to Bundaberg. Another option is to drive to Brisbane then catch our charter bus to Bundy.
Getting home again is easiest by using either the event charter service to the airport, back to Brisbane to connect with train and bus services or taxi back to collect your car.
I'm from Tin Can Bay/Maryborough way
You're kind of in the middle. We think the best option for you is to impose upon someone to drive you to Bundaberg and then to pick you up from one of our charter bus drops post event. Or get together with some friends and charter a small bus.
I'm from out west
You're always going to spend more time travelling than the rest of us. We think the best option for you is to drive to Brisbane or Bundaberg (whichever is more convenient) and park. Depending on where you have left your car, at the end of the ride you can either make your way to the Brisbane car park or catch our charter bus back to Bundaberg.
Loan Vehicles
The organisers need a large number of vehicles to support this event (yes, we get the irony!) and a mutually suitable arrangement can be for riders to drive to the event, loan their vehicle to the organisers for the nine days and then drive home again. This is a limited option and is only available through arrangement with the Event Director. Download the loan vehicle application form for further details.
Private Support Vehicles
Private support vehicles are not permitted on the event. Bicycle Queensland provides numerous vehicles to transport staff, contractors, volunteers, riders, bikes, luggage and all the infrastructure needed for the campsite. Wherever possible, these vehicles take an alternate route between daily destinations to ensure maximum safety for Cycle Queensland riders. By preventing additional private support vehicles Bicycle Queensland aims to make the ride more enjoyable and safer for cyclists.
