FAQs
1. What is Bike Week?
Bicycle Queensland’s annual Bike Week kicks into gear on Saturday 13 March for a nine-day, citywide celebration of cycling.
Pedalling the message, Cycling is Smart Travel, Bike Week 2010 will present a range of rides and (mostly) free activities to demonstrate the numerous fitness, financial and fun benefits of the pursuit and encourage people of all ages to get in the saddle.
Individuals and groups can saddle up for signature Bike Week events, the BDO Brisbane Coot-tha Challenge, with its famous hill climb, and the more introductory Great Brisbane Bike Ride.
With more than 20 events ranging from the corporate challenge of Scody Ride to Work Day, leisurely riverside Goldcross Family Fun Ride, informative Epic Cycles Maintenance Workshops and the lycra love of 10 speed dating, there is something for everyone during Bike Week 2010.
Mountain Biking, Road Riding, Criterium, BMX, Bike Orienteering and the European craze Cyclocross City CX all feature in the program and highlight broad sporting directions open to cyclists.
Female riders can find inspiration at the popular Women’s Ride and Seminar and discover tips on training, road safely and bicycle maintenance or bring their bubs in tow to the Babes on Bikes Ride.
2. I haven’t ridden a bicycle in ages. Can I still participate?
Of course you can! As they say, you never forget so dust off the old bike and get involved. There are shorter leisure rides for beginners with stops along the way to enjoy a drink and snack to refresh and rest the legs. Only sections of some roads will be closed for major rides but clearly marked routes will be planned to make your ride safe and enjoyable. There will also be seminars organised to help you get your bike back in good condition and improve your riding skills.
There are also non-cycling events such as a film night at the Schonell Cinema, St Lucia.
3. Do I have to be a BQ member to participate?
No you do not. But if you would like to become a member of Bicycle Queensland and join over 10,000 other people who receive great benefits, which include personal accident and third party insurance, discounted entry fees, 12 months subscription to Australian Cyclist and regular updates on cycling developements.
4. How can I participate?
You can register online at www.bq.org.au for all Bike Week events. Individual and team entries are available. If you have a corporate team you may also wish to organise a corporate marquee package through bicycle Queensland. See the teams and corporates page for more information.
5. Where are the events?
The events are run at various locations across Brisbane. Leisure rides will depart from the North, South, East and West sides of Brisbane. Seminars and information nights are held at central locations including West End, Milton and Brisbane Library. Highlight events, the Great Brisbane Bike Ride and the BDO Brisbane Coot-tha Challenge, will kick off and finish at the South Bank Cultural Forecourt.
6. What do the events cost?
Many of the Bike Week events including the leisure rides, Scody Ride to Work Day Breakfast and 10 speed dating are FREE. There may be a small fee to enter some events such as the Mountain Biking and Bike Week Cup.

7. Can I bring a friend?
The more the merrier! Bike riding is a great social sport and a good excuse to get together with friends for coffee or breakfast after the ride. Why not organise a team from work or school to ride together? Teams with 10 or more adults can enter adults at the member price.
8. I’d like to be a volunteer on the day. How do I do this?
Bike Week takes an enormous effort to organise and simply can not be done without the help of a large team of volunteers. You could be a marshal, or a rest-stop helper, or take one of the more specialised roles such as sign crew or site set-up. If you are interested in volunteering you can register your interest online.
9. I still have questions. Who can I talk to?
If you have any further questions you can speak to one of the friendly staff at Bicycle Queensland on (07) 3844 1144.
